Cultivating a Healthier, Happier World—One Box at a Time

Annie's Homegrown turned a grassroots mac & cheese operation into America's most trusted organic brand through mission-driven marketing and authentic consumer connection.

Challenge

Organic shelf-stable foods were booming—growing 20% annually—but Annie's found itself surrounded by giant CPG competitors and supermarket house brands with far bigger budgets and staff. The brand had pioneered the organic category, but suddenly faced "me-too" products on every shelf. With no TV, radio, or print advertising budget, Annie's needed to build consumer passion and loyalty using only its website and the deep trust consumers already felt for the brand.

Approach

Annie's focused its web strategy on brand building rather than direct ecommerce (which accounted for just 1% of sales).

Result

Annie's became the #2 mac-and-cheese brand nationally, right behind Kraft—despite spending a fraction of competitors' marketing budgets . The brand's authenticity continued to resonate: by 2017, Annie's was staging a "Bunny Bowl" livestream on Facebook for Super Bowl week, and its mission-driven approach eventually led to an $820 million acquisition by General Mills in 2014 . Today Annie's remains a triple-bottom-line business committed to planet, people, and profit.
